READING / Read the following texts carefully and then answer the questions
Most people in Tehran believe that they are protected from a large earthquake because their city is once in a while shaken by small earthquakes that releases the energy little by little. But unfortunately this is not true. The amount of energy released in a small earthquake is not enough to stop a large one from occurring. A moderate earthquake, of Richter magnitude (= degree) 5, releases only one thousandth (0.001) of the energy of a large magnitude 7 earthquake. For example, a million magnitude 2 earthquakes would release the same amount of energy as one magnitude 6 quake. In other words, 32768 magnitude 2 earthquakes would release the same amount of energy as one magnitude 5. The only thing that the moderate quakes in Tehran may actually tell us is that there will be a larger earthquake.
1. In the first sentence of the text the writer has used ……… function.
a. restating b. generalizing c. defining d. naming
2. The word “moderate” in line . . . is best defined as:
a. very small b. very big
c. neither big nor small d. either big or small
3. The energy release during a magnitude 7 earthquake is ……… bigger than a magnitude 5 quake.
a. thousand times b. 32768 times c. hundred d. six
4. According to the passage, ……… .
a. The energy released in a small earthquake is so small that it can’t stop a large one from coming.
b. People in Tehran are not fortunate enough to survive a large earthquake.
c. Most people in Tehran are fortunately protected from a large earthquake.
d. Tehran has never experienced an earthquake, even a small one.
READING / Read the following texts carefully and then answer the questions
Every body knows about earthquakes. Suppose you feel the ground or a building shake. You might think, "earthquake" even if you don't live anywhere near an earthquake zone. Or suppose you are watching a science fiction movie and a big crack opens in the earth, and the tall building comes crashing down. "Earthquake!"
However, there is more to earthquake than this, and the more you know about the science of earthquakes, the more interesting it gets! For one thing, earthquakes can happen either on land or under the ocean. Earthquakes on land cause most of their damage when they occur in heavily populated areas, especially when they start fires. Earthquakes under the sea sometimes cause big waves that are extremely powerful and dangerous when they hit land.
One famous earthquake was the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. As the earthquake hit San Francisco, it overturned stoves and gas lamps, which started fires all over the city. To make the problem worse, the earthquake also broke the main water line, making it difficult for firemen to put out the fires. For three days the fires burned , damaging much of the city. Another amazing, but dangerous, event caused by earthquakes is a tsunami. Tsunami
is a Japanese word meaning "harbor wave". These big ocean waves are often caused by an earthquake under the ocean, and can travel at speed of 500 miles per hour or more. In the past, tsunamis have destroyed whole villages and countries, and they
remain a threat to people who live on the seaside or on an island.

5. According to the passage, earthquakes happen only on land and cause fire.
a. True ( ) b. False ( )
6. The text tells us that tsunami waves are caused by an earthquake under the ocean.
